One of the most common responses I get from Recruitment and Search Business Owners when I tell them to raise their fees is this…
“But… My clients won’t pay a higher fee”
Which always makes me chuckle…
Because if you’re like most Recruitment and Search Business Owners and you picked your fee at random,
Based on what you were charging at the Firm you worked for before you started your business,
OR you simply looked at the rest of the market where charging and did the same…
The chances that you happen to be charging the highest fee your clients and potential clients will pay for your services is almost an impossibility…
It’s highly likely that they’re paying some of your competitors higher fees than they’re paying you right now, especially if you work on a contingency basis but the same is probably true for most Retained Recruiters too…
And even if you’re the most expensive Recruitment/Search Business in your market, it seems ridiculous to me to think that even a slight increase in your fees would see the market turn on you and never buy from you again (assuming you’re actually good at what you do)…
Do you think if Ferrari increased the average price of one of their cars by 1% they’d suddenly stop selling cars?
Of course, not… The same is true for any product, brand or service you can think of… Including your Recruitment or Search Business…
I’m not saying EVERYONE in your market will pay a higher fee, but there are a percentage that certainly will! Especially if you’re good at what you do…
But being a good recruiter is only half the battle….
You also need the ability to convince your clients of that fact,
You need the guts to walk away from anyone who doesn’t agree to your fees
AND you need the ability to replace the prospects that won’t pay with a seemingly never-ending stream of prospects that will…
